The Storm: Black luck

26/10/10  ||  Lord K Philipson

I’ve stated it before but it’s obvious that GD is a household name in the world of music. Warner is fucken sending us albums nowadays, just to name one thing. “Warner” as in super-major label. That is just weird. Some Italian jackoff’s are sending badly spelled hatemails to name another proof of our supremacy. We are obviously a force to be reckoned with, just like I planned it all along. Over the years we have been taking the world by… storm! See, how’s that for a smooth transition over to this particular band, appropriately called The Storm? I know, I am a fucken genius. While I am sitting here crysturbating (crying/masturbating at the same time) I applaud myself.

*Fap fap fap*

Along with this CD came a cute little note from troll-kid/world championess of being charming’n‘sweet/label employee Jenny Lund, claiming that The Storm is “poppy music with female vocals”. I already knew this as I take quite a liking in their debut “Where the storm meets the ground”, so naturally I decided on reviewing this myself. That’s a good thing for The Storm seeing everyone else on GD would prolly have bashed the fucklights out of this band. Not me though, oh no. I really dig me some of this shit.

It’s poppy alright, there’s no denying that. But it’s also a very nicely crafted piece of music that these Danes deliver. Neatly recorded by Jacob Hansen (who’s worked with bands such as Volbeat and Hatesphere among thousands of others, not to mention his past as guitarist/vocalist in Denmark’s finest export Invocator) – the production is great and really brings out the ace voice of girl Pernille Rosendahl, who together with her dude/fuck target of choice, Johan Wohlert, make up The Storm.

No, this is not metal – no matter how much you stretch it. It’s catchy, written-for-radio (at times a little mainstream rockish, I guess) music with an honest feel to it and so many hooks and memorable vocal lines you’ll prolly throw up a little in your mouth when you hear it – in case you are (unlike me) not sold on music like this. But it’s not all great. Some tunes remain quite anonymous, preventing this from getting a higher grade. Also, there’s no track on “Black luck” that is as striking as the opener, “Drops in the ocean”, on their debut album. They even have a video for it, so go check it out, bitches. Nonetheless, this is some fine cheese.

Can I recommend this to you regulars at GD? Not so much. Your metal-infested brains can’t handle The Storm. It’ll make you look like this before the first tune’s been played in its entirety thru your speakers. But me, I am greater than that. I can handle it all fine and do not hesitate for a second to hand out a well-deserved:

7,5
